Now that we have addressed what appropriation is versus appreciation; it is time to tackle exactly how to manage to appreciate a culture without appropriating it? This can be a rather hard question, because everyone's boundary for appropriation is different. When it comes to appropriation it really comes down to responsibility. First the historical significance to the society that you want to model something after should be researched. If what you are about to do is something sacred to that society, than it is not wise to pursue it. The main difference between appropriate and appreciation is respect. When doing whatever it is make sure you treat the object/beliefs but also yourself with respect. Remember that not everyone will perceive what you are doing in the same way. If you cannot deal with possible questions with criticism that will come during your time of appreciating another society, then it probably is not the brightest idea. If you ever really question whether this is a good idea or should I leave it alone?, those judgements are probably for a really good reason, meaning that you should make the decision for yourself or ask someone who tends to have a good sense of judgement. If you have come through all these objectives and realize that you have appreciated and not appropriated, take this opportunity to educate others of the historical significance if asked questions.
