What comes to mind when you think about ‘Africa’ and why?
When I think Africa, I instantly think of culture, partially because I carry African heritage in me, but also because African culture is so rich and diverse across the whole continent.
I think of poverty… sickness… beauty… Maybe people doing things to make the best out of what they have… that may not be morally right. I also think of rich culture, diversity. I guess I get these ideas from movies and documentaries.

Unfortunately, I think my views on the continent are heavily influenced by how it is portrayed in the media. I guess what comes to mind is probably huge expanses of open land with lots of exotic animals. Also, poverty comes to mind I think because that's what we hear about the most in America. But there's also a sense majesty that surrounds Africa that is hard to explain. I know that this is all probably inaccurate after meeting people that have immigrated from Africa. Before coming here I don't know if I had ever really interacted with someone who had immigrated from Africa or their parents had immigrated so I pretty much only knew what I read about in books (mostly fiction) and saw on TV.
