How do people throughout the Africana World interact with the environment? How do they
improve or worsen issues related to climate change? We answer those questions here.
Happy Earth Day! April 22 marks the birth of the modern environmental movement and is recognized across the globe. On this 45th anniversary of Earth Day more than 192 countries are participating in activities to celebrate and protect our earth. The city of Johannesburg in South Africa is celebrating as well with a multitude of activities to increase awareness about the environment. Their intention is to unite people around the city, country, and globe in support of a healthy planet. Additionally they aim to encourage the people of Johannesburg to speak out to their local, national, and international governments to push for environmental protection legislation. The youth of Johannesburg are getting involved with Earth Day through other activities. The City Parks staff joined school children of the city to plant trees and participate in gardening. They also brought in speakers to educate the children more about Earth Day and how to be environmentally friendly. Johannesburg is only one of many cities across Africa that have brought together people of all ages to celebrate our beautiful Mother Earth.
